A fast internet plan does not guarantee a stable home-office connection. The link between your computer and router can still introduce congestion, interference and latency.
For most people, modern Wi-Fi is convenient and fast enough. Ethernet remains valuable when consistency matters more than mobility.
Ethernet's main advantage is consistency
A wired Ethernet connection creates a direct link between your device and the local network. It is less affected by walls, neighboring wireless networks and the changing radio environment around your home.
That makes Ethernet particularly useful for desktops, docking stations and workspaces that stay in one place.
For video calls, remote desktop sessions and large uploads, stable latency can matter as much as headline download speed.
Wi-Fi wins on flexibility
Wi-Fi lets you work from different rooms without running cables through the house. Modern wireless standards can deliver more than enough throughput for browsing, office software, streaming and conferencing under good conditions.
The weakness is variability. Performance can change depending on distance, obstacles, channel congestion and how many devices are active.

When a USB-C Ethernet adapter makes sense
Many thin laptops no longer include an Ethernet port. A USB-C adapter or dock can restore wired networking at a permanent workspace.

Use Ethernet for stationary equipment where reliability matters: desktop PCs, work docks, network storage and perhaps a game console. Use Wi-Fi for laptops, phones, tablets and devices that benefit from mobility.
This can also reduce unnecessary wireless traffic.

Choose Ethernet when your workstation is fixed and you value predictable latency and stability. Choose Wi-Fi when mobility and a clean cable-free setup matter more and your signal is already strong.
