How Much RAM Does Lightroom Need in 2026? 16 GB vs 32 GB vs 64 GB

Lightroom can run on surprisingly modest hardware, but the amount of memory that feels comfortable depends on what happens around Lightroom—not just whether the app launches.

Adobe currently lists 8 GB of RAM as the minimum and 16 GB or more as the recommended amount for Lightroom and Lightroom Classic. That makes 16 GB the official mainstream target, but it does not mean every photographer should stop there.

The practical choice in 2026 is usually between 16 GB, 32 GB and, for heavier workflows, 64 GB.

The short answer

For most photographers:

  • 16 GB is enough for Lightroom by itself, moderate RAW editing and normal catalog work.

What Lightroom actually uses RAM for

Is 16 GB enough for Lightroom in 2026?

Yes, for a large share of users.

Adobe still recommends 16 GB or more, and a well-configured 16 GB machine can handle:

  • hobby photography;
  • travel and family RAW libraries;
  • routine exposure and color adjustments;
  • masking;
  • moderate exports;
  • moderate catalog sizes;
  • occasional Photoshop use.

The biggest limitation is not that Lightroom suddenly stops working. It is that the operating system has less headroom when several memory-heavy tasks overlap.

On a modern laptop with a fast SSD, the system can use storage as virtual memory when physical RAM fills up. That prevents an immediate crash, but storage is much slower than RAM, so heavy swapping can make the machine feel less responsive.

Why 32 GB is the sweet spot for serious photographers

For photographers buying a new non-upgradeable laptop in 2026, 32 GB is often the most comfortable long-term configuration.

It gives more space for Lightroom, Photoshop and the operating system to coexist without aggressive memory pressure.

32 GB becomes especially easy to justify if you:

When 64 GB is actually useful

64 GB should be treated as a workload choice, not a premium badge.

Lightroom alone rarely needs that much memory. The justification usually comes from everything surrounding it.

  • focus stacking with many high-resolution frames;
  • professional video editing alongside photography;
  • 3D or design applications;

Apple silicon changes the conversation

On Apple silicon Macs, CPU and GPU use a unified memory architecture.

That makes the capacity decision more important because the same pool is shared across the system and graphics workloads, and it cannot be upgraded later.

For a Mac used mainly for Lightroom, 16 GB can still work well. For Lightroom plus Photoshop and years of ownership, 24 GB or 32 GB-class configurations provide more breathing room where available.

Do not compare unified memory and traditional PC memory using capacity alone. The architecture and application behavior are different, but the practical question remains the same: how much simultaneous workload do you expect?

Storage can matter as much as RAM

A slow or nearly full storage drive can make a system feel worse even when it has enough memory.

Adobe recommends using a fast SSD, and its Lightroom Classic performance guidance specifically notes performance benefits from fast storage for catalogs, previews and image files.

  1. enough RAM;
  2. a fast SSD with comfortable free space;
  3. a capable GPU for supported acceleration;
