Matter Cameras in 2026: What Support Means Before You Buy

Matter 1.5 added camera support, but camera buying still depends on storage, video quality, ecosystem features and manufacturer implementation.

Matter camera support is real, but it does not make every Matter camera identical.

The Matter 1.5 specification added cameras as a supported category in November 2025. That is an important interoperability milestone, especially for a category that previously depended heavily on proprietary integrations.

A buyer still needs to evaluate the camera as a camera.

Matter 1.5 created a common camera foundation

The Connectivity Standards Alliance's Matter 1.5 announcement lists cameras among the major new device categories in the release.

This gives device makers and ecosystems a standardized way to describe and interact with camera capabilities.

It does not mean every existing security camera can be upgraded, nor does it mean every ecosystem supports every camera feature equally.

Video quality remains product-specific

Matter does not choose the lens, image sensor or image-processing pipeline.

Compare:

  • resolution;
  • field of view;
  • low-light quality;
  • HDR;
  • frame rate;
  • microphone/speaker performance;
  • latency;
  • weather resistance for outdoor models.

A poorly designed camera does not become a good camera because the control layer is interoperable.

Storage is still a major decision

Before buying, decide where recordings should live.

Common models include:

  • cloud subscription;
  • local microSD;
  • hub/base-station storage;
  • NAS or NVR integration;
  • event-only clips;
  • combinations of local and cloud storage.

Check whether important features depend on an ongoing subscription.

Privacy needs more than a compatibility logo

A camera sees sensitive parts of your home.

Review:

  • whether recording can remain local;
  • whether remote viewing requires a vendor cloud;
  • account security and multi-factor authentication;
  • encryption claims;
  • retention controls;
  • sharing permissions;
  • status indicators;
  • physical privacy shutter where relevant.

For indoor cameras, placement is a privacy decision as much as a coverage decision.

Ecosystem features can exceed the base standard

A platform may offer object recognition, package detection, face recognition, timeline search or automation features beyond standardized camera functions.

Those features may be vendor- or ecosystem-specific.

If one feature is the reason you are buying the camera, verify it in the exact platform you use rather than assuming Matter makes it portable.

Network quality becomes visible quickly

Video is a heavier workload than a simple sensor or lock command.

A camera on weak Wi-Fi can suffer delayed notifications, low-quality streams or dropped events.

Before blaming the camera, check signal strength and congestion at the installation location.

For multiple cameras, good access-point placement and wired backhaul can be more valuable than buying a more expensive camera.

Consider failure behavior

Ask what happens when:

  • internet service is down;
  • the vendor cloud is unavailable;
  • Wi-Fi restarts;
  • storage fills;
  • power is lost;
  • the subscription expires.

A security device should fail in a way you understand.

Some cameras can continue local recording during an internet outage; others lose major features.

Do not replace a good system just for Matter

If your current cameras are reliable, secure and well integrated, there may be little reason to replace them immediately.

Matter support is most valuable when you are buying new hardware, mixing ecosystems or trying to reduce dependence on proprietary integrations.

Standards adoption takes time. Mature existing products can remain the better choice during that transition.

Bottom line

Matter camera support is a meaningful step toward interoperability, not a universal quality guarantee.

Evaluate image quality, storage, privacy, network behavior and subscription requirements first. Then treat Matter as an additional compatibility advantage.

The best smart-home camera is one you can trust to record the right thing, store it where you expect and keep working under the failure conditions that matter to you.
