Not every iPhone running iOS 27 gets Siri AI

The biggest compatibility trap is assuming that software support automatically means AI support.

Apple says Siri AI and the broader Apple Intelligence feature set require newer hardware. Supported devices include iPhone 16 models or later, along with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The company also lists compatible iPads and Macs based on newer Apple silicon.

That hardware requirement exists because many Apple Intelligence functions rely on on-device processing, with more demanding requests able to use server-side systems when necessary.

For owners of older iPhones that still receive iOS 27, the update can still deliver interface, security and app improvements. What it will not do is magically add the hardware capabilities required for the complete Siri AI stack.

The practical advice is simple: check the exact device model, not just whether the Settings app offers the iOS 27 update.

Language availability is another limitation

Siri AI starts with English-language devices, according to Apple's published availability information. The company plans to expand support to more languages, including French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.

That means a supported iPhone configured in another language may not receive the new assistant immediately even though the device is technically capable of running it.

Mac and Vision Pro users in the European Union can access Siri AI when their devices use a supported language, but Apple has said Siri AI will not initially be available on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS in the EU. The company attributes the difference to regulatory considerations.

Apple has separately said Siri AI and other new Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while it works through local regulatory requirements.

iOS 27 is more than Siri AI

Users without access to Siri AI still receive other changes in iOS 27. Reporting on the final release highlights additional customization, interface refinements and updated controls, including changes around the Liquid Glass visual system and more granular audio settings.

Apple also used WWDC26 to present broader Apple Intelligence improvements across apps such as Photos and Safari. Some AI features rely on server models and may have usage limits, with Apple saying expanded access is included in many iCloud+ plans.

This is another sign that Apple is moving away from treating AI as one isolated assistant feature. Intelligence is increasingly spread across the operating system, while Siri acts as the most visible conversational layer.

Should you install iOS 27 immediately?

For most users on a supported iPhone, there is no need to treat the update differently from other major iOS releases. Back up the device, confirm that essential apps support the new version and install when convenient.

Users who depend on specialized enterprise apps, accessibility workflows or device-management software may prefer to wait until those tools confirm compatibility.

Siri AI should be evaluated separately. Because it launches as a beta, users should keep expectations realistic and avoid relying on it as the only path for critical tasks. A new assistant can be more capable while still misunderstanding context or failing to complete a request.

The most useful comparison is not whether the new Siri can produce impressive demonstrations. It is whether it reduces friction in everyday tasks without creating new uncertainty.
