Does a Matter Smart Lock Work Without Internet? What Still Works Offline
Learn what a Matter smart lock can still do during an internet outage, including local control, Thread, keypads, Bluetooth, remote access and automations.
A smart lock is one of the worst devices to misunderstand during an internet outage. If the cloud disappears, you still need to get through the door.
The good news is that many Matter smart locks are designed with local control and physical fallback methods, but the exact offline experience depends on the lock, its transport, your Matter controller and the ecosystem you use.
So the useful answer is not simply “yes” or “no.” It is: some important functions can keep working locally, while remote and cloud-dependent features usually cannot.
Matter is designed around local IP networking
Matter devices communicate over local IP networks using transports such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread.
For battery-powered devices such as smart locks, Matter over Thread is common because Thread is a low-power IPv6 mesh network.
Google's current Thread documentation describes Thread as providing local connectivity and explains that Thread devices join the home's existing network through a Thread Border Router.
That local-network architecture is important during an internet outage. Your home's LAN can remain active even when the connection from your router to the wider internet is down.
But the presence of a local network does not guarantee that every app feature works offline.
What usually keeps working
The most dependable offline features are the ones implemented directly by the lock.
Depending on the model, that may include:
- a physical key;
- a keypad PIN;
- fingerprint or other onboard biometric access;
- NFC or local digital key support;
- inside thumb-turn operation;
- Bluetooth control from a nearby phone;
- some Matter-based local commands through a functioning local controller.
Certified Matter locks can expose multiple access paths. For example, the Connectivity Standards Alliance lists current locks that combine Matter over Thread with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or manual operation.
That redundancy is exactly what you want on a device attached to your front door.

What usually stops when the internet goes down
Anything that requires a cloud server needs an internet path.
Typical examples include:
- unlocking the door while you are away from home;
- receiving cloud push notifications on a phone outside the house;
- viewing cloud-based activity history;
- changing access settings through a vendor cloud service;
- integrations that route commands through remote servers;
- some voice-assistant functions;
- remote guest management.
The lock itself may be functioning perfectly while these features are unavailable.
That distinction matters. An internet outage is not the same thing as a power outage, a Wi-Fi failure or a dead lock battery.
Thread can keep the local network alive—but it needs infrastructure
A Matter-over-Thread lock does not connect directly to ordinary Wi-Fi.
It joins a Thread mesh, and a Thread Border Router connects that mesh to the home's Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
Google describes the border router as the bridge that allows Thread devices to become part of the user's existing IP network.
If your internet provider goes offline but your router, Matter controller and Thread Border Router remain powered, the local network can still exist.
If the border router itself loses power, however, a phone or controller on the Wi-Fi side may no longer have a path to the lock's Thread network.

Matter controller and Thread Border Router are not the same thing
This is one of the most common sources of confusion.
A Matter controller manages Matter devices in an ecosystem. A Thread Border Router provides IP connectivity between the Thread mesh and the adjacent local network.
One product can perform both roles, but the roles are separate.
That means an offline setup depends on the complete path:
lock → Thread network → border router → local network → Matter controller/app
If all of those local components remain available, some control can continue without the internet.
If your ecosystem relies on a remote cloud path for a particular feature, that feature may still fail.

Bluetooth can be an important backup
Some smart locks include Bluetooth in addition to Matter.
Bluetooth is useful because a nearby phone can communicate directly with the lock without relying on the home internet connection.
The exact capabilities vary by manufacturer. Some apps allow local unlocking over Bluetooth; others reserve Bluetooth mainly for setup.
Check the product documentation rather than assuming the presence of Bluetooth guarantees every local feature.
Keypads and fingerprints are even more independent
An onboard keypad or fingerprint reader can be one of the strongest offline fallbacks because authentication happens at the door.
If the lock has power and the credential is stored locally, it may not need your router, Thread network or internet connection to unlock.
This is why we prefer smart locks that retain a conventional access path.
A smart lock should become more convenient than a mechanical lock, not more fragile.
Internet outage vs power outage
These are very different failure modes.
During an internet outage, your router and hubs may still have power, so local Matter and Thread communication can continue.
During a power outage, battery-powered locks can remain powered, but mains-powered routers, hubs and border routers may shut down unless they are on backup power.
In that situation, local keypad, key, fingerprint or direct Bluetooth access becomes even more valuable.

Remote access is the feature most likely to disappear
If you are standing outside the house, offline local access is straightforward: use the keypad, fingerprint, key or supported nearby-phone method.
The harder case is controlling the lock from another city.
Remote access needs some route from your phone over the internet back to the home. Without internet at the house, that route is broken.
A Matter logo does not change that basic networking reality.
Test your lock before you depend on it
The best time to learn what works offline is not during an outage.
Run a controlled test:
- confirm you have a physical or electronic fallback;
- disconnect the home's internet connection while leaving local Wi-Fi powered;
- test the keypad and physical key;
- test nearby app control;
- test your Matter ecosystem locally;
- check which automations continue;
- verify what happens when the Thread Border Router is powered off;
- reconnect everything and confirm normal operation.
Write down the result for other household members.
Bottom line
A Matter smart lock can retain important functions without internet, especially when access is handled locally through a keypad, key, fingerprint, Bluetooth or a functioning Matter/Thread local network.
What generally disappears is remote access and other cloud-dependent behavior.
The safest buying strategy is to assume that the internet will eventually fail and choose a lock that still lets the household enter the home when it does.
