Smart bulbs and smart switches can both make ordinary lighting controllable from apps, voice assistants and automations, but they solve the problem from opposite directions.

A smart bulb puts the intelligence inside the light source. A smart switch keeps the bulb conventional and moves the intelligence to the wall.

For many homes, the better choice depends less on which product has more features and more on how people already use the room.

Smart bulbs are the easiest way to start

Smart bulbs usually require no electrical work. You replace the existing bulb, pair the new one and configure it in your preferred smart-home platform.

That makes them attractive for renters, bedrooms, desk lamps and anyone experimenting with home automation for the first time.

They are also the better option when you want features that a wall switch cannot create by itself, including:

  • adjustable white temperature;
  • full-color lighting;

The wall-switch problem with smart bulbs

Smart bulbs generally perform their own electronic dimming and expect full power from the circuit.

Smart dimmer switches, meanwhile, need to be compatible with the type and electrical characteristics of the bulbs they control.

When smart bulbs are the better choice

They are also useful when a fixture has no convenient wall switch.
